Photo Colorizer

  • Restoring old landscape photos from family vacations presents a different challenge than portraits, because the human eye is extremely sensitive to unnatural colors in natural scenes like skies, trees, and water. I had a collection of faded slides from a 1980s trip to the Grand Canyon, where the red rock formations had turned an ugly shade of brownish purple due to chemical degradation of the film emulsion. Standard color correction tools could not fix this because the color shifts were nonlinear, affecting shadows differently than highlights. The Photo Colorizer tool solved this problem by analyzing the entire image holistically and reconstructing the original color relationships based on geological knowledge of how canyon rocks should appear. The resulting images showed the vibrant reds and oranges that my parents remembered seeing with their own eyes, and the blue sky looked natural rather than the weird cyan that often appears in automated corrections. This success encouraged me to dig out all of our old vacation slides, and I have been systematically restoring them to share with the family on a private online album that grows more impressive with each batch.</span>
